Description
RF terminations (RF terminators, RF loads) are components that are used to electrically terminate coaxial RF ports. They are typically placed at the end of a transmission line to prevent RF signals from being reflected. RF terminations absorb the electrical energy of a signal as it reaches the end of a line, thus preventing it from being reflected and becoming noise. They ensure that current flows smoothly from one device to another.
RF terminations are designed to match the impedance of the circuit to help minimize signal reflections and power losses. All multi-port RF systems with unused ports should be terminated, so that any signal incident on empty ports is absorbed. If a port is not terminated, signals can reflect back into the system and cause distortions or other unwanted effects.
RF terminations are important in high-frequency systems and circuits, especially when dealing with high-power signals. They can also be used to close open terminations that might otherwise allow unwanted signals to enter a system. We have RF terminations available in many different form factors with power ratings to match their sizes.
Termination parameters
Impedance is the ratio of voltage to current with the consideration of phase angle. The impedance value of the termination must match the characteristic impedance of the port being terminated. 50 Ohm terminations are most widely used, but there are also 75 Ohm terminations as well as custom values.
Power (W) is the power level that the termination can absorb while maintaining its electrical characteristic.
VSWR is a ratio figure that indicates the amount of power that is reflected by the termination. A value of 1:1 indicates that 100% of the incident energy is absorbed by the load or there is no reflected energy. Any other value would mean that a portion of the energy is reflected.
Return loss (dB) is the loss of power in the signal reflected by a transmission line termination. High return loss figures are typically desired.
Termination types
We provide terminations in all different form factors, such as surface mount, connectorized, and waveguide. With connectorized terminations the connector type must also be specified. Connector types include: SMA, BNC, N-Type and more. Let us know your application and we’ll find you the right termination.
